What Could Go Wrong? Bournemouth 18/19 Season Preview

Bournemouth finished 12th last season with 44 points. Can Eddie Howe and the Cherries continue their unlikely run in the Premier League?

European Chances

If Bournemouth are going to make a run up the table, Callum Wilson or Joshua King have to start pouring in the goals. Who else is going to score? This is my big gripe with the Cherries because they’re always tough to play at home, but they always seem to be playing from behind. Sooner or later, that’s going to catch up with a club that wasn’t expected to last this long in the Premier League.

So, who’s going to put you up early? New signee Jefferson Lerma isn’t a goal-scorer, David Brooks hasn’t played in the Premier League, Lewis Cook is a better facilitator, Jermain Defoe is 90 and Lys Mousset has two goals in 34 appearances.

It all comes down to Wilson and King, for me. The two combined for 16 goals last season.  If they don’t reach at least 25, the Cherries can kiss a top half finish goodbye.

When Will Your Manager Be Fired

Eddie Howe. So young. So full of life. Please, Premier League managerial gauntlet, spare this young man and his bright future.

Checkout Bournemouth’s November and December:

  • Home — Manchester United
  • Away — Newcastle United
  • Home — Arsenal
  • Away — Manchester City
  • Home — Huddersfield Town
  • Home — Liverpool
  • Away — Wolverhampton
  • Home — Brighton and Hove Albion
  • Away — Tottenham
  • Away — Manchester United

What do you see from above? Six, maybe 7 points? It’s going to be a tough march to end the calendar year, putting Howe in an awkward spot. If they don’t rebound against Watford and Everton after that stretch, Howe could be gone, and Bournemouth could be selling in order to prepare for Championship football.

Which Player Will A Bigger Club Poach?

It didn’t happen this summer, but clubs are swirling for Lewis Cook. The midfielder was the captain for England during the 2017 U-20 World Cup and brought the mini version Home for England. If Bournemouth finds themselves in the relegation zone around Christmas again, Cook could be gone before the club falls into a spiral.

Unknown to Household

Diego Rico is suspended for the first two matches of the season for being sent off in his last La Liga game at Leganes last spring. The signing of Rico proves the maturity for a Premier League side that has stuck around, even if they’re near the bottom financially.

Rico is expected to beat out long-time Cherry servant Charlie Daniels at leftback. It’s an improvement for Bournemouth who seem content treading water in the middle of the pack.

Relegation Odds

9/2 – Just better than Burnley but not as good as Newcastle.
